About this method

The monotub is the workhorse of home cultivation: mix colonized grain spawn into a bulk substrate (coco coir, vermiculite, gypsum) inside a modified storage tub, and let it do its thing.

You can buy ready-colonized grain spawn (easier, legal in NL) or make your own from rye grain and a spore syringe (cheaper at scale, needs a pressure cooker).

Bigger substrate means bigger flushes, but also bigger contamination stakes — this method rewards people who have grown before.

The process at a glance

  1. Prepare the tubDrill air holes, add liner, cover holes with micropore tape.
  2. Prepare bulk substrateHydrate coco coir + vermiculite to field capacity (pasteurized).
  3. Spawn to bulkMix grain spawn evenly through the substrate; level the surface.
  4. ColonizeLid on, hands off, ~1–3 weeks at 21–24°C until the surface is white.
  5. Fruit & harvestIntroduce fresh air and light; mist walls; harvest flush after flush at veil tear.
